From piano music to orchestral works.
At the age of eight I started at the Ferwerda academy in Drachten. Here I learned solfège, reading notes and playing classical music, which I enjoyed playing until I was fourteen. In addition to playing and listening to classical music, I also regularly listened to soundtracks from video games and movies. Here I took pieces that I could play by ear on piano and decided to work them out for piano. They were pieces of Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Country, Luigi's Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean.
By arranging I gained more knowledge about the use of chords and different chord progressions. Because of this I became interested in covering the original parts of the soundtrack with the same line-up and started to develop in this way in the use of an orchestra. While covering these pieces I looked up everything about the instruments I used and tested this in new works.
I always love to listen to symphony orchestras. The timbres of the orchestra give me a calming feeling and I decided to delve into this. I started writing a piece myself when I was fifteen to see what timbres there are. At the Friesland College Sound Design I learned how to use Synthesizers, recording equipment and mixing and mastering productions. Here I also met DJ and music producer Marcel Kostwinder. Together with Marcel I wrote a number of pieces for symphony orchestra based on elements from nature. I learned from him to use simple melodies and different instrument choices. Out of interest I sent the last work I wrote with Marcel Follow the River to a publisher in England.
With the feedback I received, I started writing on Plain Fields. A work based on the weather. I shared this work with one of the founders of the online sheet music platform Sonolize who put me in touch with media composer Tom Schipper. Together with Tom Schipper I improved the work even more, which led to an official release of Plain Fields. I am really very satisfied with the end result. What I learned from Tom Schipper is to make more use of my orchestration. Since then, I have been following an orchestration course with Tom Schipper. In which I learn more about how I build the piece, how to use my orchestration and read the score to compare how the classical composers used their orchestra.
Nature and water are a great source of inspiration for me. Running water and the sounds in nature give me a soothing feeling. This allows me to come up with scenarios to which I make appropriate melodies. When writing the work, I come up with a story on which I eventually write my themes. It is a great dream for me to be able to hear my own written work live. I have chosen to sell my work at Sonolize because it is a fantastic website where composers and arrangers can share their works with the world and thus build networks and possibly collaborate.
