Interview with Adriaan Dropsie
We are very excited that Adriaan Dropsie is offering his classical Spanish compositions for guitar and flute through Sonolize. Adriaan studied at the Pedagogical Academy, after which he did the bachelor "classical guitar". He started his musical career with the flute but changed it for the guitar. Adriaan studied with Balthazar Benítez at the Brabant Conservatory. He followed master classes with, among others, Roberto Aussel and Abel Carlevaro. Adriaan is a member of the Dutch Society of Composers. We would like to introduce him to you.
How does someone from the Netherlands get so immersed and proficient in Spanish guitar music?
The guitar and Spanish art and culture are of course closely intertwined, more than with other instruments. You don't just think of flamenco as an art form, but also of all that other Spanish classical music. At Instituto Cervantes I have had Spanish language lessons for a number of years and of course I like to go on holiday in Spain!
With Abel Carlevaro and Balthazar Benítez you have had lessons from guitarists who worked a lot on their sound, is that something you are also working on?
Every guitarist has to work on his sound, just like a wind player has to work on his embouchure. I think sound nuances are more important than a classic tone, and nothing beats a handmade Spanish guitar!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
My inspiration is life itself, my wife and children, the events that I experience and hope to experience. Inspiration alone is not enough, you have to sit down and actively convert your acquired knowledge into a new product. Then comes the perspiration.
What characterizes your style of composing?
It's safe to say that I compose eclectically. Using old-fashioned form principles, I can easily put timbres from Latin and jazz music next to a classical counterpoint.
How do you keep developing yourself as a composer?
By continuing to listen, not only critically to yourself, but also to others. I am open to all kinds of music, but it has to do me something in a positive way.
You are known as someone who has very good recordings of his compositions. Do you play everything yourself?
I do the recording myself; I have years of experience with it, also in editing and mastering in my own home studio. The flute parts are played by my musical partner from the duo “Entre Dos”, Karin Jochems-Basting, one of the best flute players in the Netherlands. I made 3 CDs together with Karin. Of course, I play the guitars myself. For certain productions I also play in other instruments, possibly using an EWI, an electronic wind instrument, preferably the Yamaha WX5 with real samples via the VL70m module. With this I can imitate any instrument, without it looking like midi.
How important is it to write in a style that appeals to many people?
Music is a way of showing love, wrapped in sound. It has to touch you, in a positive sense. I don't feel like experimenting with strange sounds that make eyebrows frown. It is funny to give certain techniques, born from experiments, a place in music that is easy to listen to. I also give a place to certain techniques from flamenco, such as the rasguados and alzapua (a special thumb technique).
What does a typical working day look like for you?
Besides the composer's work, a lot has to be done to pay the bills! Of course, I am a musical entrepreneur with my own teaching practice, I coordinate a music school and even teach one day a week at a primary school.
One Covid19 question… What does this period mean for your work process?
My main income comes from teaching practice. Fortunately, I can work online during this period, but on a top day like Wednesday I will be online for at least 6 hours in a row. I prefer to meet my students in a "natural" situation, which is a lot more relaxed ...
How do you see the future of the musical landscape, will the composer ultimately have the last word?
The sheet music shops have almost all disappeared. There are more and more sites where you can buy and download music. So, the choice for Sonolize is obvious, although I have also been published through other publishers such as Ascolta, Malmberg and Guitar International. It always remains a game, so supply and demand, so also a game between the composer and the person who will perform it. In other words, teamwork in all respects, literally and figuratively!
One of the consequences of publishing your own music is that you also have to be active in marketing yourself. How do you do that?
A number of advices is also given by Sonolize, following Sonolize at socialmedia, link on your own site, sharing via Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram, informing your acquaintances and colleagues, etc.
More music at school
In the days previous to the Dutch Queen Máxima's 50th birthday on 17 May, the Dutch foundation "Meer Muziek in de Klas" (More music education at schools) is calling on all of the Netherlands to make an extra effort in music education at schools.
From piano music to orchestral works.
The great thing about Sonolize is that composers know how to find each other to learn from each other. Tom Schipper, for example, helps the young composer Tae Hyung Ruisch to become even better. Read his blog on how.

How can I find the copyright holder as an arranger?
If you want to arrange a work from a composer, you will have to ask the copyright holder. But how do you find out who manages the rights of the composer you are looking for?
