Interview with Sandro Bucciarelli
Sandro Bucciarelli won several prizes as a saxophone player. He is also in high demand as a teacher, conductor and composer. Sandro is currently working on a big Disney concert with singers from Berlin, Vienna and Cologne and recently finished a great trumpet concerto for one of the leading wind bands in Luxembourg. We are proud to present him as one of the three most talented Luxembourg composers.
Where do you get your inspiration from and how do you keep developing yourself as a composer?
My main source of inspiration is nature. Whenever I'm exhausted, I am going for a long walk in the forest. That recharges my batterie and all the sounds, birdsong, etc. are so beautiful and inspiring! As a conductor, I am constantly analyzing scores and learning new techniques.
What characterizes composers and musicians from Luxembourg?
A big difference is the music education. The children can get an instrument from an orchestra and the music lessons, with highly educated teachers, are free!
In your choice for arrangements, you choose very classic compositions, and this is also recognizable in your concerto nr 1. What do you think of contemporary music, and do you see yourself writing in a more modern idiom?
To be honest, I don't even think about writing in different styles. I also often get told that I'm mixing film music/epic music with classical music. When I started composing, I always thought that I have to show how many composition techniques I know, but I don't do that anymore. I simply write down the music that plays in my head. And this music is not contemporary (at least not at the moment).
How do you combine composing, conducting, teaching, and making music?
I always compose in the morning, teach in the afternoon, and conduct in the evening. Of course, it is a 7-day job. But I don't see it as "work". Anyhow, when I'm free for once, I'm also making music, just without getting paid.
Can creativity and commercialism coexist in making music?
No, absolutely not! I don't like capitalism anyhow.
How do you see the future of the music and publishing landscape?
People are always shocked when I tell them how little composers get paid by most of the publishers. Something has to change and initiatives like Sonolize have to be supported.
