VLAMO aims a composition competition for fanfare
The Flemish music organisation VLAMO is focusing on the brass band for the 2021 Composition Competition. Composers can participate by submitting a new work for the lower divisions before August 31, 2021.
The VLAMO Composition Contest 2021 looks a bit different from previous years. From now on the music organisation will no longer look for new work for concert band and fanfare at the same time. These disciplines will alternate annually. In this way, the association wants to stimulate and inspire composers even more to create a piece of music tailored to the intended orchestra shape and the accompanying instruments. Quality over quantity. This year, VLAMO will be looking exclusively for new compositions for fanfare.
Since 2020, the fanfare culture has been part of the Flanders Inventory for Intangible Cultural Heritage. During the discussions in the run-up to the heritage application, the brass band underlined the importance of new, high-quality repertoire for all levels, with sufficient attention for the lower sections. Existing pieces of music are often arrangements of concertina or brass band repertoire, which do not always take into account the typical instrumentation of the fanfare orchestra.
VLAMO wants to continue to actively promote new and high-quality brass band repertoire. In addition to the biennial composition assignment for the VLAMO Open Fanfare Championship (higher divisions), the music organisation will now also go in search of brasserie music for the lower divisions every two years with this adapted composition competition.
The competition focuses on compositions for the level of the second and third division. The entry closes on August 31, 2021. An amount of 2500 euros is available in each department for the winning composition. Click HERE for all further information, regulations, forms and instrumentation.
