How can I find the copyright holder as an arranger?
By uploading and selling music on Sonolize you automatically accept our terms and conditions - read these carefully. One of the things we value very much is that you have the rights of the music yourself. Without you having those rights, we unfortunately cannot post your music. We assume that you have arranged this properly.
Each unique and creative work has been created by someone who has the rights to it. In music, this is the composer. In practice, it often works slightly differently. The rights are in many cases managed by a publisher. And the latter has often transferred these rights to another party.
Because of all those intermediary parties, only a small amount of the selling price remains for you when you sell or rent out your work. We believe that composers should not only receive an honest fee for their music, but also remain owner of their copyrights. Because unlike with traditional publishers, as the copyrights remain with the composer, with Sonolize you receive 100% of the royalties. In addition, as a composer you receive 65% of the sales price of your work.
Who manages the rights?
If you want to arrange a work from a composer, you will have to ask the copyright holder. But how do you find out who manages the rights of the composer you are looking for? The easiest way is through the BUMA in The Netherlands (or of course the other national copyright institutions in other countries). Here it has been established who manages the rights of a lot of music and they have developed an easy tool in which you can look that up.
After entering the title and composer, the publishers appear. You often see multiple hits, such as the mechanical right (CDs, recordings), but also the publisher. If you click on "Publisher" you will get the contact details. If there is no hyperlink, there is no other option than to search the internet for the contact details of the publisher and send them a message. They can help you further.
In the case of US composers, you almost always end up with Hal Leonard. They manage the rights of many composers. At Halleonard.com, you choose 'publish' in that facade and from here on, things are clear again.
It is a lot of work, but at Sonolize we think it is important that the original maker gets what he is entitled to. And yes, if you have made a nice arrangement, you of course indicate this at the BUMA in your personal "portal". This way you can be sure that you will also receive the compensation that belongs to the performances of your creation. As we fully endorse Fair practice.
More music at school

The great thing about Sonolize is that composers know how to find each other to learn from each other. Tom Schipper, for example, helps the young composer Tae Hyung Ruisch to become even better. Read his blog on how.
