Interview with Dimitri Sprokkereef: An Inspiring Musical Journey
Sonolize is delighted to introduce the Dutch composer Dimitri Sprokkereef. Raised in a Salvation Army family, Dimitri developed a love for brass music at an early age before discovering his true passion: composing. Drawing inspiration from an exceptionally wide range of interests—including literature, photography, anthropology, biology and cosmology—he creates music that often tells stories and brings people, places and ideas to life. We spoke with Dimitri about his musical journey, his sources of inspiration and his love for writing for wind and brass ensembles.
You grew up in a Salvation Army family, surrounded by brass music, and later started playing the euphonium yourself. In what way has that musical background influenced the way you compose today?
It is the sound world in which I think most naturally. The character of the hymns forms my earliest musical memories and had a major influence on my development when I began to study music theory. I still write primarily for wind instruments, although I do not limit myself to them. Even when I write for other instruments, that background still plays a role. For example, I think I still find it easiest to come up with a melody, compared to a rhythm or a harmony.
In your biography, you mention a wide range of interests, from photography and cultural anthropology to cosmology and paleobiology. How do these seemingly non-musical subjects find their way into your compositions?
All the subjects that I enjoy engaging with are full of stories, sometimes quite concrete and sometimes more abstract. When I browse through photography books, I am inspired by the colours, shapes and contrasts, or I find myself wondering about the story behind an image. Even the seemingly more difficult subjects, such as cosmology, can come to life through images and sound. A research report may not be very inspiring, but photographs taken by the James Webb Telescope immediately capture the imagination. Fossils always make me daydream about what that lost world might have looked like. I try to translate that world into a sound world, a musical idea.
Hymn for Euphonium has become one of the standout works in your catalogue. What was the story behind this composition, and what makes the euphonium such a special and inspiring instrument for you, both as a composer and as a euphonium player?
The funny thing about that composition is that I wrote it before I started seriously studying composition. The arrangement was full of basic mistakes, which is why I recently revised it, but I left the solo part almost completely unchanged. Other “compositions” from that period I would no longer consider suitable for publication, but with this melody it is different.
I think the euphonium is a wonderful instrument. It is versatile and has a warm, singing tone that is particularly well suited to the kind of melodies I enjoy writing. Of course, there is also a personal connection: both my grandfather and my mother played the euphonium, and I fell in love with its warm sound at a young age, as well as the often lyrical lines full of countermelodies in Salvation Army congregational songs.
Brass and wind music occupy an important place in your oeuvre. What fascinates you most about writing for brass bands and wind orchestras, and what possibilities do these ensembles offer you as a composer?
I grew up in a world of brass bands and brass music, so that was the context in which I developed my musical ideas. I started listening to many other kinds of music myself, but I almost always translated them into wind music in my own mind. What I find special about this family of instruments is that breath is required to make music. It is an extension of your own voice, and therefore it has something deeply human about it for me in a way that no other instrument does.
Particularly in the brass band world, there is a strong tradition. As a composer, I want to embrace that tradition, but at the same time there are developments that modern classical music has gone through that brass band music has not, or at least to a lesser extent. As a result, there is still unexplored territory within the genre, and that is naturally exciting for a composer.
How do you usually begin a new composition? Do you start with a musical idea, or does the concept, story or subject come first?
I have many ideas—too many to develop them all. In particular because I tend to think immediately in terms of large ensembles and multi-movement works. So I often let ideas exist for a while. If I forget them, they were apparently not valuable enough; if they return later, I write them down. Then I start developing material. If that works, I create a composition plan; if it does not, I leave it alone until a later moment.
If I have to force it too much, I remain uncertain throughout the entire writing process. The elaboration may certainly be work, I take a pragmatic view of that, but the musical ideas that form the foundation of a composition should come more or less naturally.
You describe composing as a continuous journey of gaining experience and trying new things. What musical challenges or areas would you still like to explore as a composer in the future?
I enjoy learning new things, so in new compositions I like to look for challenges for myself. An instrument or instrumental combination I have never written for before, a new technique. There is so much to discover.
At the moment, I am particularly interested in special techniques of certain instruments. For example, I am currently working on studies for trombone in which many of these techniques are explored. I am also fascinated by the combination of acoustic music and recorded sound, and I would very much like to explore that further.
How do you see the future of sheet music publishing, and what made you decide to make your music available through Sonolize?
For anyone looking for sheet music, it is a great advantage that an extensive online catalogue is available in which a certain level of quality is guaranteed. That last aspect is especially valuable when searching for new music. The platform offers a user-friendly way to discover new music and composers.
Publishing sheet music is something I do not have to worry about as a composer affiliated with Sonolize, and that is valuable because it allows me to focus on what I enjoy most: writing music.

Interview with Ron van Effrink
De Dutch composer of contemporary music Ron van Effrink started to compose not until later in his career as musician. He is an autodidact, a few years ago he got lessons in counterpoint. He is inspired by classical composers such as Bach, Debussy and Stravinsky. This October his latest composition for Symphony orchestra 'Overture Waves of Ireland' was performed during the Westerkerk Music in Veenendaal (NLD).
