Biography
The pleasure of composing, improvising and playing music is paramount.
Gijs van Dijk, born in 1954, musician/composer.
A versatile musician, a composer, an improvisator, a jazz- and pop musician, a classical guitar player and a singer songwriter. And the former teacher of many talented students.
Gijs studied composition and music theory for 1.5 decades with the great Dutch composer Tristan Keuris.
He has always operated as an independent musician, outside any mainstream movements. Nevertheless an ongoing stream of concerts and performances has been going on for decades. One week a concert rendition in the Concertgebouw and the next week an invitation to join a group of buskers at a festival, or a free improvised concert in an illustrious jazz club.
He has composed dozens of pieces for various ensembles, mostly contemporary chamber music, including a lot of saxophone music. Often, but not always, commissioned by Dutch national cultural funds.
He is convinced that improvisation and composition are equal expressions of creative music. His style varies from fairly accessible to extremely hermetic.
His compositions have been performed in the Netherlands and abroad by outstanding and often well known Dutch musicians.
Now retired, he is pleased that Sonolize has offered to include his works in their catalogue.
