100 year anniversary of windband St. Remi from Baarle Nassau/Hertog.
Baarle Nassau/ Hertog, a small twin village where 22 pieces of Belgium are situated in the Netherlands. No wonder a lot of smuggling took place because of these many borderlines. Especially in the 50's of the last century, butter and tobacco were the favourite goods to cross the borders without paying taxes. No wonder that Customs was trying to stop this, but often this escalated in complete battles between the border police and the smugglers. They were using crow's feet, spike mats, armoured cars and guns and it will not come as a surprise that now and then a man lost his life. Almost every night it was a mixture of silence and noise, waiting and running.
The composer used all off this to create a composition with al lot of contrast, both in tempi as in sound. At several points in this work you will regognize the anthems of Belgium and the Netherlands, merged together. In a same way as the village itself.
