Woodwind Quintet

A three-movement piece with each very own characteristics. The first movement opens with a calm introduction (Andante) [0:06] and is a conversation between much keys until the piece gets suddenly to C flat minor but resolves to B flat because it is working as a tritone substitute of F. Then after the introduction, the Presto starts [2:30], where the first theme is very stating because of the unisono opening. The movement is already filled with joy, pleasure and even a bit (musical) fun in that theme. The second theme could be easily a Trio from a March and is also written with a wink to the music I grew up with as a child. The second movement [9:18] is very different, mainly because of two things: the meter is unregular (5/4) and the chord progression is very different. There is much more use of colour notes and modal writing. Especially the very 'musical'-ish chords and the use of 'The Lick' is not only a joke, but a serious reference to what I learnt. Also this is a very different movement, because it's a set of theme and variations. While the duet of the oboe and horn in the theme are very cantabile, the duet of the flute and oboe is a build-up of virtuousness. The last variation in the bassoon is more like a joke, therefore also the usage of the Lick. The third movement [14:03] is an attempt to write polyphonically, in a fugal way. It is not a very typical fugal piece, therefore the different title. All instruments have a dialogue with each other, and travel through very much keys. When you think you arrive at the reprise [15:10], you expect to be at the homekey, but you got wrong footed because it is in A - flat instead of B - flat.
