String Quartet: 2 vln, vla, vlc
The seed of the String Quartet "Family Album" (2007) is a chord cycle which I played in the early nineteens into my sequencer and the melody I improvised on it. When I saved the improvisation on a diskette, I named it "Wistfullness of a Family Album" because of the mood.
A trenchantly used tone row, which I constructed from this material, is giving contrast for the basic materials beauty and wistfullness, especially in the second movement. Also wild rhythms give contrast, for example in the first movements balkanese rhythms and in the third movement, where a machine starts leisurely, but increases into
furious rage. After this outburst of pressure the music goes down for a short moment into an ecstatic waltz.
In the fourth movement "Nostalgia" the wistfull basic material is finally naked.
The chords, which were introduced in the first movements restrained dance, come back in an earnest mood to give their final comments.
