Waves was written with a nod to Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt, whose famous "Canto Ostinato" has mesmerized many musicians and listeners. Waves is much easier and shorter than the wonderful piece by Ten Holt, but it poses its own rhythmical challenges. Feel free to choose your tempo. Waves can be played either slow or fast, with very different results, depending on whether you like to move leisurely over the water or want to create a storm. Also, the piece could be doubled with other pianos in various ways. I imagine a performance with five pianos, each with three players, but the possibilities are endless. One could experiment with canon-like forms, where the second group starts when the first group arrives at point 2, in bar 13. And so on. Just get into the spirit of the experiment, and start inventing your own variations and rhythms. The sky is the limit.
