For solo voice without accompaniment
A setting of the Sonett XXIII from "Sonette an Orpheus, Teil II" by Rainer Maria Rilke, for solo voice without any accompaniment. You can transpose the piece. Inspired by Morton Feldmans setting of the same poem in English translation ("Only"). My version is in the German original.

O erst dann, wenn der Flug
nicht mehr um seinetwillen
wird in die Himmelstillen
steigen, sich selber genug,
um in lichten Profilen,
als das Gerät, das gelang,
Liebling der Winde zu spielen,
sicher, schwenkend und schlank, -
erst, wenn ein reines Wohin
wachsender Apparate
Knabenstolz überwiegt,
wird, überstürzt von Gewinn,
jener den Fernen Genahte
sein, was er einsam erfliegt.
