Samba for concert band

This samba is the third (and final) movement of the First Suite for concert band by Peter Habraken. Together with the waltz (part 2) this samba was composed in 2023 on behalf of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy.

In the original commissioned version it had a special instrumentation: it was written for concert band without saxophones, trumpets and trombones, because it was composed for a particular occasion when part of the orchestra was abroad. For this edition, the composer has created a brand new version for full concert band.

The other two parts (a pasodoble and a waltz) are also available for purchase on this website.
The complete suite is here available: https://www.sonolize.com/en/music/2741/first-suite-for-concert-band-complete

The world premiere took place on July 22, 2025, at the Salle de Manège in Hesdin, France, by the Dutch Symphonic Wind Orchestra conducted by Ruud Welle.

“It was so wonderful to have performed all three movements of the First Suite with DSWO in France no fewer than five times last month. Paso Doble, Samba, and Waltz provide a lovely variety. Also a pleasure to listen to. Highly recommended!” (Marcel van den Bosch, trombonist (Dutch Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Excelsior Papendrecht))

Note for the conductor: There are several options to shorten or lengthen this samba. If you play both specials (J - O and O - T) and the improvisation pattern once (bars 40 through 83), the samba lasts 4:10. Each additional round of improvisation adds approximately 45 seconds of time.
