A portrait based on old Dutch songs, written for fifes and drums.
In honor of the 400th year of birth of Great Dutchman Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676), the Fifes and Drums of the Dutch Royal Marines decided in 2006 to have a new medley of old Dutch songs written. Peter Habraken, then clarinetist of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, was recruited as arranger.
Some of the songs tell about Michiel de Ruyter, others were popular in the Netherlands during his lifetime.
In order to give the arrangement extra depth, in addition to the usual line-up of fifes and drums, the signal horns played by them in B-flat/A-flat (with one valve) were also added in three-part harmony. In the finale this produces extraordinary harmonies, which give the arrangement a unique character.
The signal horns are optional.
As a bonus, drum parts in the original notation of the Royal Marines are included.
