Biografie
German composer (b. 1983) with roots in Russia, also publishing under the alias Λrthvr.
My musical journey started with playing the guitar, which later led to a deeper study of composition. In my early years, I focused almost exclusively on electronic pieces and videos, collaborating with various sound artists. Some of my videos were screened during live concerts, as well as at independent film festivals. In 2017, I contributed a sound composition to an annual festival that brings together acousmatic music and Butoh performance.
Recently, my focus has shifted toward vocal and instrumental music. My vocal music is non-liturgical. In my setting of poems to music, which I have composed in five different languages so far (predominantly in German), I write with a focus on utmost purity and transparency to ensure that every word remains clearly audible and serves the overall context of the poem. To date, all of my settings of poems have been composed without instrumental accompaniment and are, in most cases, set for one to three solo voices.
The other part of my vocal works consists of pieces without text. Here, my interest lies in developing a form of wordless vocal polyphony that varies in complexity and is written for a differing number of predominantly solo voices. Free from textual constraints, this approach allows me to concentrate purely on the interplay of the vocal lines. Some of these pieces include instrumental accompaniment. Generally, I view vocal music as the centerpiece of my compositional work, which I intend to expand further, particularly wordless singing. I draw inspiration from a virtually lost tradition of vocal polyphony in which wordless singing was widespread: the music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
In my works for string orchestra, I strive for the emotional depth and harmonic richness provided by the specific nature of string instruments.
My series of etudes for guitar (Arpsolos) is inspired by Kapsberger’s Toccata Arpeggiata as well as other pieces consisting essentially of arpeggios. Based on this principle, it was my endeavor to unite harmonic beauty with technical challenges while maintaining the simplicity and transparency inherent in arpeggio-like pieces.
At the same time, I continue to work in the fields of photography and video. Drawing from this interdisciplinary experience with visual media and Butoh performance, I am highly open to future collaborations that combine my music with genres such as dance or figure skating. Furthermore, I am interested in exploring new possibilities for musical performance, for instance in unique architecture, far removed from conventional concert halls and churches. This is particularly important to me regarding my wordless vocal music, for which I want to develop a new performance format outside the common practice of today's vocal music, which is almost exclusively liturgical in character.
My music is entirely self-composed, without the use of AI.
