Program Notes
This is an arrangement of JG Reinbergers 'Abendlied' for six parts and optional euphonium and soprano.
Abendlied – also known by its incipit Bleib bei uns – is a motet by the Liechtenstein-Bavarian composer Joseph Rheinberger (1839–1901). The text, from Luke 24:29, is the plea of the Emmaus disciples to the risen Christ: "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over" – words they spoke before sharing a meal with Him.
The autograph manuscript, held in the Bavarian State Library in Munich, bears the date March 9, 1855, indicating Rheinberger composed the work at the age of just 15. Around his 24th year, he made substantial pencil revisions to the manuscript, which formed the basis for the version performed today. In 1877, he also created a Latin setting, strikingly similar to the English hymn Abide with Me.
Text: "Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden, und der Tag hat sich geneiget."
