Passacaglia in F minor for String Orchestra

Duration: 6 minutes

Written for string orchestra (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Contrabass), the work unfolds at a deliberate Lento tempo, allowing the harmonic progressions to breathe and resonate with orchestral weight.

The composer employs a narrative structure across four acts:

  • Act I (Variations 1-3): "Emergence from Darkness" - from solo bass to full orchestral awakening
  • Act II (Variations 4-6): "The Dance of Fate" - featuring "sideways sliding" harmonies and corrupted waltz elements
  • Act III (Variations 7-9): "The Storm" - building to maximum textural and dynamic intensity
  • Act IV (Variations 10-12): "Transcendence" - either peaceful resolution or epic transformation

The work emphasizes sustained orchestral textures over individual virtuosity, creating masses of sound that moves like heavy. Modal harmonies and subtle chromaticism color the traditional F minor framework, while the unchanging ground bass provides an inevitable foundation beneath the evolving variations.

The bass shifts its octave in the final measure, turns the celli lyrical.

Suitable for advanced student orchestras through professional ensembles. The technical demands lie not in rapid passages but in sustaining intensity, managing slow tempo control, and creating cohesive sectional sound.
