Johann Strauss jr. (1825 - 1899) is by far the most famous composer of waltzes, polkas, operettes and other popular classical music that ever lived in Vienna. His music is still often performed, especially during New Year's concerts and by classical orchestras such as that of Dutch violinist André Rieu. The Blue Danube / An der schönen blauen Donau is perhaps the most famous Waltzerfolge ever composed. Par force, a polka schnell which can be performed in two minutes, is an energetic piece of music that is very suitable as an encore or 'light note' during a concert. It can be performed straightforward, extremely fast or playful; the compositions of Strauss leave much room for interpretation to inspire both musicians and audience.
