Emiel Matthijsse is a Dutch percussionist and composer with a broad musical background. After completing his studies in Classical Percussion Performance at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, he became a highly sought-after musician. He has collaborated with all the major orchestras in the Netherlands. In addition, he was a permanent member of both Slagwerkgroep Den Haag and Anumadutchi for an extended period. With both ensembles, he undertook numerous tours, both within the Netherlands and abroad, performing at various renowned venues and festivals.

Around the age of twenty-five, he began to focus more intensively on composing. During that period, he created the work ‘Different’, an innovative piece for traditional Japanese and African percussion. This composition was performed during the ‘Drums of the World’ tour by Anumadutchi and Circle Percussion and was characterized by an intriguing fusion of different musical cultures and timbres. The work was also recorded on the CD of the same name, through which it reached a broader international audience.

In the years that followed, he continued to expand his body of work with various new compositions. These works include ‘Father’ and a series of piano pieces. Driven by a constant search for new sonic worlds and expressive possibilities, he decided to take composition lessons with composer David Dramm, which helped him further develop his compositional style and explore new artistic directions.

With the completion of his Marimba Concerto No. 1, he set out on a new path in his musical career. This work marks an important step in his development as a composer and reveals a mature, personal signature. The concerto was received with great enthusiasm during its premiere at the Theaterkerk in Bemmel, where the audience responded with praise for the composition’s originality and expressiveness.

Emiel Matthijsse is een Nederlandse slagwerker en componist met een brede muzikale achtergrond. Met beide ensembles maakte hij een groot aantal tournees, zowel binnen Nederland als daarbuiten, waarbij hij optrad op diverse gerenommeerde podia en festivals.

Rond zijn vijfentwintigste levensjaar begon hij zich intensiever te richten op het componeren. In die periode ontstond het werk Different, een vernieuwend stuk voor traditioneel Japans en Afrikaans slagwerk. Deze compositie werd uitgevoerd tijdens de tournee Drums of the World van Anumadutchi en Circle Percussion en kenmerkte zich door een intrigerende samensmelting van verschillende muzikale culturen en klankkleuren. Het werk werd bovendien vastgelegd op de gelijknamige cd, waarmee het ook een breder internationaal publiek bereikte.

In de jaren die volgden breidde hij zijn oeuvre verder uit met diverse nieuwe composities. Tot deze werken behoren onder andere Father en een reeks pianostukken. Gedreven door een voortdurende zoektocht naar nieuwe klankwerelden en expressiemogelijkheden besloot hij zich verder te bekwamen in compositie. Hij volgde lessen bij componist David Dramm, die hem hielpen zijn compositiestijl verder te ontwikkelen en nieuwe artistieke richtingen te verkennen.

Met de voltooiing van zijn Marimbaconcert nr. 1 sloeg hij een nieuwe weg in zijn muzikale carrière in. Dit werk markeert een belangrijke stap in zijn ontwikkeling als componist en laat een volwassen, persoonlijke signatuur horen. Het concert werd met veel enthousiasme ontvangen tijdens de première in de Theaterkerk in Bemmel, waar het publiek lovend reageerde op de originaliteit en zeggingskracht van de compositie.
