Biografie

David Avshalomov is a third-generation American classical composer, conductor, and vocalist, based in Santa Monica, California. A graduate of Harvard University (B.A., Music, magna cum laude) and the University of Washington (D.M.A. in Orchestral Conducting), he studied composition with Charles Jones, John Verrall, Robert Suderberg, and William Bergsma, and conducting with mentors including Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Bernstein.

As a composer, Avshalomov writes in an accessible modern romantic, neo-tonal style, noted for its lyricism, rhythmic vitality, and expressive harmonic language. His works span solo, chamber, choral, band, orchestral, and operatic music, and are widely performed across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America. He has received numerous commissions, including from the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Western Plains Wind Consortium, and Anglican Chorale of Southern California. His music is recorded on Albany and Naxos, and he has earned support from organizations such as Meet the Composer, the American Music Center, and the Durfee Foundation. Avshalomov has received major recognition, including designation as an Honored Artist of the American Prize (2014) and multiple awards in national and international composition competitions.

As a conductor, he has led orchestras, choruses, bands, and opera companies for over two decades, founding the Santa Monica Chamber Orchestra and guest-conducting ensembles across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, including the Santa Monica Symphony and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

An accomplished bass vocalist, Avshalomov has performed professionally since his youth, appearing as a soloist, chorister, and recitalist with ensembles ranging from the USAF Singing Sergeants to contemporary vocal groups in Los Angeles.
